Must be some truth in charges against Gadkari: Shinde

New Delhi: There must be some truth in the allegations of wrongdoing against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Nitin Gadkari, union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said here on Friday.

"If media is reporting that Gadkari has done something wrong then there must be some truth in it," Shinde told reporters on the sidelines of a function here.

India Against Corruption (IAC) member Arvind Kejriwal had last week levelled allegations related to land deals in Maharashtra against the BJP chief.

The latest allegations against Gadkari are about improper business dealings as chairman of the Purti group.

The BJP has said that any competent authority could probe the charges.

CBI questions Tejinder Singh, Ravinder Rishi again

New Delhi: CBI on Thursday questioned Lt Gen (retd) Tejinder Singh and Vectra Chairman Ravinder Rishi in connection with alleged bribe offer made by the former to the then Army Chief V K Singh to clear a tranche of allegedly substandard all terrain vehicles.

CBI sources said Managing Director of Vectra group Anil Mansharamani and a city-based businessman were also part of questioning.

The agency sources claimed they had got enough prima facie evidence of Singh's relations with arms dealers, including Rishi, which could have prompted him to make an offer to the then Army Chief.

Singh has denied having any links with Rishi and even said no such offer was ever made by him.

"Investigation will reveal that I am not involved and also the reasons for someone raking it up one and half years after the alleged incident," he had said in reply to an SMS sent for his reaction.

The then Army Chief Gen (Retd) V K Singh had alleged that Singh, who retired as chief of Defence Intelligence Agency in July 2010, offered him a bribe of Rs 14 crore in his office in September, 2010 to clear the purchase of a tranche of 1,676 Tatra BEML trucks, a matter he had reported to Defence Minister A K Antony.

Rishi is a Director in the Tatra Sipox UK which supplied trucks through public sector undertaking BEML.

He is also an accused in CBI FIR related to the truck supply deal.

CBI had initiated a preliminary enquiry in April after getting a formal complaint from the then army chief.

Singh had refuted the allegations and also slapped a defamation case against Gen Singh.

The agency, after six months of preliminary investigation, had converted it into a regular case of alleged violation of Prevention of Corruption Act as it found enough prima facie evidence against Tejinder Singh.

APJ Abdul Kalam hopes Vision 2020 will be fulfilled in next eight years

Kanpur: Former President APJ Abdul Kalam Azad on Thursday hoped that Vision 2020 would be fulfilled within the remaining eight years in order to bridge the gap between the country's villages and urban areas.

Special attention needs to be paid to villages because till their progress is brought at par with that of the cities, the country cannot develop fully, Kalam said at IIT Kanpur.

While addressing a gathering during the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Student Gymkhana in the institute, he said majority of the country's population resides in villages and their progress is crucial to the integrated development of the country.

This is why necessary developmental programmes need to be undertaken in the villages, which is already happening, he said.

While exhorting students to "pay back the society," he administered oaths to them to use their education in the service of the nation and endeavour for a "corruption free, clean society" for the benefit of future generations.

On the need for financing nuclear tests even as the country faced the challenge of poverty, he said this was a necessity to strengthen India's borders.

Kalam also inspected the wind tunnel faculty of the institute and interacted with teachers on research programmes being carried out here.

10,000 anti-tank guided missiles to be procured from Russia

New Delhi: A Rs 1,200 crore proposal for procuring 10,000 anti-tank guided missiles for the Army from Russia was cleared on Thursday by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).

The CCS cleared the proposal to acquire Russian-origin 10,000 Konkurs-M anti-tank guided missiles for the Mechanised Infantry and Infantry battalions of the Army, sources said.

The Konkurs-M are part of the weapon systems being procured by the force to augment the anti-tank arsenal in the Army, they said.

The CCS had last week cleared the purchase of 25,000 Invar missiles for the T-90 tank fleet under a Rs 2,000 crore proposal.

The Konkurs are part of the anti-tank weapon family of the force which includes the Milan anti-tank guided missiles which India has been buying from France and also license-producing it at the Bharat Dynamics Limited facilities here.

Soon after the Mumbai terror attack in 2008, there were reports suggesting that the Army was facing a severe shortage of tank ammunition as well as anti-tank weapons.

Former Army Chief Gen VK Singh had also written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh highlighting a critical shortage of tank ammunition and obsolescence of the air defence weaponry.

Soon after the letter was received, Defence Minister AK Antony held several rounds of meetings with top Ministry brass and military officials and since then has taken steps to ease the shortfall.

Mallya loses billionaire tag; networth down to USD 800 million

New York: Liquor baron Vijay Mallya, often referred to as 'King of good times', has lost his billionaire tag as "bad times" in his aviation business have dragged down his networth to below the USD 1 billion mark.

According to Forbes magazine's India rich list released on Thursday, Mallya is now ranked 73rd with a fortune of USD 800 million (about Rs 4,285 crore), a sharp plunge from 49th place last year with a fortune of USD 1.1 billion.

However, Mallya ranks well above Naresh Goyal of Jet Airways, who has been ranked by Forbes at 94th position with a fortune of USD 600 million.

"King of good times is having nothing but bad times lately. His (Mallya's) Kingfisher Airlines, weighed down by what is believed to be USD 2 billion in debt, had its license suspended in mid-October after it apparently failed to address Indian regulator's concerns about its ability to operate," the magazine said.

Moreover, the airline hasn't paid staff in seven months and now is offering three months salary but staff wants more and has asked to hear from Mallya directly.

"...the tycoon, who has pledged a chunk of his shares, is believed to be trying to sell his stake in his liquor company, United Spirits, to Diageo to help pay off the airline's debts.

He has already sold part of his stake in his Formula One team. He owns a cricket team and millions worth of Gandhi memorabilia, Forbes said.

The magazine said the networth is based on shareholding and financial information from the families and individuals, stock exchanges, analysts and India's regulatory agencies.

The fortune is calculated on the basis of stock prices and exchange rates information available as of October 12, it added.

Biodiversity of India

File:Lotus.jpg

We strongly believe that knowledge is the first step towards any kind of change. Thus, we created this Biodiversity Of India website. The BOI website, part of the Project Brahma Initiative, is an open-source, community driven project, much like Wikipedia, where anyone - regardless of their religion, nationality, language, expertise - can contribute their knowledge of India's biodiversity.

Why do we need to do this?
India is a megadiverse nation, housing around 6-12% of world's species. India also has a rich cultural heritage going back thousands of years. Much of Indian biodiversity is intricately related to the socio-cultural practices of the land. Unfortunately, due to population explosion, climate change and lax implementation of environmental policies, several species are facing the threat of extinction. Not only does this affect the food chain, but also the livelihood and the culture of millions of Indians who depend on local biodiversity.

It is vital that the common man is made aware of the domino effect of species loss and what we stand to lose. Project Brahma aims to create such awareness, by increasing participation of the people in biodiversity documentation and conservation. In addition, there are several organizations carrying out notable conservation work in India. Our aim is also to create a central resource where such organizations can access all kinds of knowledge about Indian biodiversity. We imagine that the Biodiversity of India website will significantly enhance environmental conservation efforts in India. Learn more about the need and aims of this project...

Amanda Todd

Amanda Todd tragedy highlights how social media makes bullying inescapable

When the girls in Jenna Bowers-Bryanton’s class pretended to vomit when she walked into the room, or when an older student slapped her on the first day back to school, Jenna’s mom, Pam Murchison, pulled her out of school.

What Ms. Murchison didn’t anticipate was that the abuse would persist even at home. Jenna received nasty messages via SMS and on forums such as Formspring, where her tormentors posted anonymous vitriol about her looks, personality and singing ability. (Jenna had her own YouTube channel.) In January, 2011, when she was 15, Jenna died by suicide in Truro, N.S.

Movie Review: It's a story of revenge...of the filmmaker wrecking vengeance on an unsuspecting audience who have to suffer torture practically every minute. But here's a choice. Synopsis: Srinu (Abhijeet) and his two sisters move to Hyderabad against their will on their widowed mother's (Amala) insistence. They land at their uncle's home located in a typical middle class neighborhood. Srinu realizes later on that life is never going to be the same again.

Movie Review: Sekhar Kammula's films are almost always set in a dream like realm where nostalgia meets utopia. For this movie the filmmaker has created Sunshine Colony where the rich and the not so rich live in different "phases." There is Gold Phase, with the plush swimming pool, swanky cars and bratty teenagers.

Cops foil Indian Mujahideen’s major plan to strike Delhi and Bodh Gaya, 3 held

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police on Thursday claimed to have solved the Pune serial blasts in August and averted terror strikes in Delhi and Bihar's Bodh Gaya during upcoming festival season with the arrest of three suspected Indian Mujahideen terrorists.

The Pune blasts were to avenge the murder of IM operative Qateel Siddique in Yervada Jail on June eight and the initial plan was to target Mumbai or the prison but later this was changed due to logistical reasons, police said.

Asad Khan (33), who is a recruiter, motivator and ideologue of the IM, and Imran Khan (31) were arrested on September 26 from their hideout in Pul Prehladpur in south Delhi and Syed Firoze (38) was apprehended from Nizamuddin Railway station five days later, Delhi Police commissioner Neeraj Kumar told a press conference here.

MONAL GAJJAR AND CHAITANYA KRISHNA IN A STILL FROM VENNELA
Critic's Rating:

Synopsis: Kadar (Kishore) and Sunil (Madhu) are forced to move to Bangkok for six months. They run into Krishna Krishna (Chaitanya) and Yuvak (Harish) and then it's sheer madness all the way.

Movie Review: The movie begins with a disclaimer. "Ee cinema lo patalu inka background score ekkado eppudo vinnattu anipinchachu. Adi kevalam kalipithame, maa vennela Deva Katta ki ankithamau." But it doesn't quite prepare you for the barrage of innuendo-less-adult-comedy that follows. It's hard to find words to describe the brand of the "boys-hostel-bathroom-humor" that you get to see in this movie. In fact, a lot of the movie plays out in the bathrooms of Bangkok.

POORNA AND HARSHAVARDHAN IN A STILL FROM AVUNA

They are happy until Mohini senses the presence of a third invisible person in the house and `it' is after her.

Movie Review: Mohini (Poorna) explains it threadbare to the police but the local inspector cannot simply understand why a loving wife as her would have to stab a man who had been in love with her for six years before they got married. The story narrated in flashback takes you to the time that Harsha (Harshvardhan Rane) brings his wife to his new palatial house.

Movie Review: The movie pushes the limits of the term 'stylized action'. In one episode you have Prabhas (in an all black ensemble) walking down the road puffing on a cigarette with the baddies flying all around him and the Dolby Stereo on full blast! In the climax, you have a bunch of smoking hot 'firang' ladies in red business suits and stilettos having a go at Prabhas, who himself is dressed in a white designer suit to boot!

Story: Shashi Godbole is a super-sensitive wife, mother and daughter-in-law; a perfect homemaker and small-time entrepreneur. Her only handicap is English. Does she manage to master the Queen's language?

Movie Review: Shashi Godbole(Sridevi) is your average, upper-middle-class mother of two, whose special skills also include making ladoos. In fact, she's so good in her sweetmeat that she even markets it.
But one skill that Shashi lacks is speaking English. This makes her the constant butt of jokes and rebuttal with her husband ( Adil Hussain) and teenage daughter (Navika Kotia). The film drives home the point that those who speak English fluently usually adapt a condescending attitude towards those who don't.

Fan makes a 70-foot painting for Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan More Pics

Even as actress Jaya Bachchan lines up a slew of events, gifts and surprises for hubby and mega star Amitabh Bachchan, who turns 70 Thursday, a young fan of Big B is working tirelessly 24x7 to gift him a touching and a very big gift.

Raj Kapoor Chitera, 26, is making a 70-foot oil painting which will show various milestones in Bachchan's personal and professional life.

Chitera, a resident of Allahabad, has done such work in the past too.

In his earlier works, he has tried to push the case for implementing the death sentence awarded to Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving terrorist after the attack in Mumbai in November 2008 that left 164 people dead.

He has also taken on the theme of pollution of the Ganga.

In 2011, he drew a 1,500-foot long painting on Sachin Tendulkar to mark his 38th birthday.

Chitera told IANS that he was a die-hard fan of Big B, and proud to belong to the city from where the Bachchans trace their roots.

"Through this humble present, I want to show Amitji how he still is a smashing hit with his fans, all of us Allahabad residents," Chitera says proudly.

Originally from Ambedkarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh, the painter now lives in Allahabad. Producing a large painting for a big occasion is something Chitera is passionate about.

Chitera says his Big B work will be in oil paint and on a roll of veneer, so that he "can send it toJalsa (Amitabh Bachchan's residence in Mumbai) later".

"The painting will have shades of all sorts, you will see a picture of Amitji's bachpan (childhood), his marriage to Jaya Bhaduri and his subsequent successes at the box office," the artist says, adding that the painting too, like a film, would have a story line.

The films depicted in the painting would include Abhimaan, Shakti, Sholay, Zanjeer, Coolie andBaghban.

Chitera has been a painter and sculptor in sand for the last ten years.

On Oct 11, Amitabh Bachchan's 70th birthday, Chitera would also be simultaneously doing a sand art gift for Bachchan, which will be executed at the Sangam, the confluence of the rivers Ganga and Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati.

While Amitabh Bachchan's birthdays have thus far been largely private affairs, this time, the family has decided to make it a mega event as he turns 70.

Media reports suggest that Jaya Bachchan, along with Piyush Pandey, will organise a two-day art exhibition - B Seventy - set to open Oct 12 at the Nehru Centre Art Gallery in Mumbai.

The exhibition is likely to host 70 Indian artists, including Manu Parekh, Paresh Maity, Anjolie Ela Menon, Akbar Padamsee, Badri Narayan, Satish Gujral, Gieve Patel, Jayasri Burman, Arzan Khambatta, Farhad Hussain, Satish Gupta, Sujata Bajaj and Praneet Soi, among others.

The lone effort of this artist from Uttar Pradesh, however, will stand out. And not just for its size.

SGPC honours kin of former Army chief Gen AS Vaidya's killers

AMRITSAR: The Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) backed Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) are observing 'martyrdom' anniversary of Harjinder Singh Jinda andSukhdev Singh Sukha, assassins of former Army chief Arun Shridhar Vaidya who was the architect of Operation Bluestar. Gen Vaidya was assassinated by the two on August 10, 1986. They were later captured, tried and sentenced to death. Their execution was carried out on October 9, 1992 in Pune jail.

The move has triggered a controversy at a time when the state's political atmosphere is agitated due to the construction of Operation Bluestar memorial in the Golden Temple complex. Declaring the assassins as "martyrs" and observing their "martyrdom" has led to apprehensions among political circles that the move may revive terrorism in the state.

The SGPC on Tuesday had performed 'bhog of Akhand Path' (religious prayers) in memory of Jinda and Sukha at Gurdwara Jhandae Bungae and also bestowed 'siropa' (a religious robe) upon Bhupinder Singh and Surjit Kaur, brother and mother of Sukha and Jinda respectively.

Sikh's supreme temporal seat Akal Takht's former jathedar Giani Puran Singh had declared Jinda and Sukha as 'national martyrs' in 1999. The SGPC has also marked death anniversary of Jinda and Sukha along with the assassins of late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in its calendar.

Operation Bluestar conducted from 3rd to 6th June 1984 was ordered by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to evacuate heavily-armed Khalistanis terrorists from the Golden Temple in Amritsar.

On Wednesday, while opposing the eulogizing of the Sikh terrorists, state BJP president Ashwani Kumar Sharma said, "We oppose such functions and from time to time we have informed our stand on it to our alliance partner SAD (B)." He said the government should be watchful of such functions so that Punjab's hard earned peace was not disturbed.

General Secretary, SGPC, Sukhdev Singh Bhaur justified the move and said that Sukha and Jinda were declared 'national martyrs by Akal Takht and the SGPC was only complying with its directions. In reply to a question whether observing anniversaries of terrorists wouldn't fan the anti-national sentiments he said, "Sikhs sentiments are deeply hurt that none of the perpetrators of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots have been punished so far."

Senior Congress leader Ambika Soni said that such controversies could vitiate the state's atmosphere. Opposing the construction of the memorial, she said, "There are divergent opinions but nothing should be done that could jeopardize the peace of Punjab."
