Mahindra Quanto: Can it beat Ertiga, Figo?

Zeebiz Bureau

Home grown auto major Mahindra and Mahindra has rolled out its compact utility vehicle Quanto, priced it at Rs 5.99 -7.57 lakhs, pitting it against the likes of Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, Ford Figo.

With the festive season around the corner, companies like Maruti and Hyundai will vie to increase customer space in the B+ hatchback segment; a space that is being shortened by every other car that tries to make a dent in the stronghold maintained by Maruti and Hyundai.

M&M Quanto can upset that balance.

The Quanto is a sub-four metre car, making it one of the smallest SUVs in the country. A new breed of compact SUV, the car is the only vehicle with 5 + 2 seating capacity.

It has a mCR100 engine and, reportedly, has the first 1.5 litre diesel engine in the world with a twin-stage turbo. The 100bhp engine coupled with 240NM of torque gives Quanto its impressive performance.

With the increase in diesel price, the first thing that comes to our mind when we plan to buy a car is its mileage. The Mahindra vehicle uses Micro Hybrid Technology and has an ARAI certified mileage of 17.2 km/litre.

Quanto comes with lot of safety features like the dual SRS airbags that inflate instantly in case of any emergency. It also has an anti-lock braking system that gives you greater control on slick surfaces.

The intellipark reverse assist system helps drivers avoid accidents while reversing. It also has a technology called Engine Immobilizer which ensures to take care of your car from prying fingers. The car also comes with powerful fog lamps.

Mahindra Quanto is the only sub 4m SUV in India with a 5+2 seating arrangement, which means that there is enough space in this vehicle. The SUV also comes with a 2 DIN music system with CD, MP3, USB & Aux in.

List of M&M Quanto variants and their prices

2012 Mahindra Quanto C2 - Rs 5.82 lakh

2012 Mahindra Quanto C4 - Rs 6.35 lakh

2012 Mahindra Quanto C6 - Rs 6.86 lakh

2012 Mahindra Quanto C8 - Rs 7.36 lakh

Let’s take a look at what the Quanto will be up against:

Maruti Suzuki Ertiga

This MUV’s demand has increased since it first came out earlier in March. The reason is quite simple; the cost at which it rolls in the B+ hatchback segment.

Maruti clocked in a record 32,000+ bookings in just a month from its launch. Interestingly, Maruti Ertiga’s 70 percent booking is for the diesel variant!

The new multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) earned its name from an Indonesian dialect which means ‘three rows’. Ertiga is strategically placed in the sub-segment of utility vehicles and this new segment is termed by Maruti as LUV-Life Utility Vehicle.

This seven-seater MPV or rather, LUV, is available in both petrol and diesel variants. Based on Maruti Swift’s platform, Maruti Ertiga Petrol packs an all new 1.4 litre 1372cc K series (K14B) engine that produces a maximum power of 93.7bhp at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 130 Nm at 4000 rpm. The selling point of the K-Series engines is that they are more fuel efficient.

The Certified fuel efficiency of Ertiga Petrol version is 16.02 km per litre while that of Diesel Ertiga is 20.77 kmpl.

Maruti MPV has a five speed manual transmission system. Plus, the car is a front-wheel drive and sports fine quality interiors, making it that more appealing to customers.

Ertiga is quite space efficient and is available in six variants: LXi, VXi, ZXi, LDi, VDi and ZDi

The petrol variant is priced between Rs 5.89 lakh and Rs 7.30 lakh, while the diesel option is priced between Rs 7.30 lakh and Rs 8.45 lakh.

Mobile home community closes gate on students

The Associated Press
Published: Tuesday, Sep. 25, 2012 - 2:55 am

BROOKSVILLE, Fla. -- School children have been put on notice.

Starting Oct. 1, they can't use the back gate at Brookridge mobile home park in Brooksville.

Every day, about 50 children use a path through the gate, which the Tampa Bay Times ( http://bit.ly/QgWXQp) calls the shortest and safest route to nearby schools.

The decision has infuriated parents, who say children will have to take much longer routes to school.

And some residents of the community of 2,500 double-wide mobile homes aren't happy the Brookridge board made the decision during a closed meeting.

Board members say they're concerned about security and don't have the money to put a guard at the gate.

But some residents told the Times they believe their objective is to make Brookridge a 55-and-older community.

Sam Pitroda, king of telecom, needs Twitter training

Sam Pitroda might have changed telecom, but he has no clue about Twitter.

To begin with, Twitter is not a great ‘medium’ for a press conference.

Consider our sense of a traditional press conference:

1. Host speaks, presents, shares data, etc.
2. Attendees are allowed to ask questions.
3. Moderator decides which questions will be answered and who (from among those present from the host team) will answer.

Most importantly, there is no limit to the length of the questions being asked nor to the length of the answers.

If this is our conventional understanding, Sam Pitroda’s conference was a big let down.

Sam Pitroda addressing the Twitter press conference.

First, the press conference was announced for 3.30 PM. However, at about 3.25 PM, Mr Pitroda invited his followers to visit YouTube and watch the briefing. If you came in at the appointed time, you could well have missed the tweet directing you to YouTube.

Next, one was unsure what the format would be – and the beginning of the ‘conference’ didn’t help matters. The first ten minutes were a monologue (much as in a traditional press conference), with Mr Pitroda holding forth on a slew of topics, all of which certainly came under the umbrella theme ‘Democratisation of Information.’

No one was clear what to do during this monologue. Some felt they could send in questions – even beyond what Pitroda was talking about – and they did. Some felt they should wait for Pitroda to finish talking – and they waited.

And Pitroda finished his ‘presentation’ and began answering questions. Except, sadly, he wasn’t too familiar with Twitter. In many instances, rather than hit the ‘reply’ button, Pitroda chose to type in the name of the questioner – with the result that we could see no connection, often, between the answer that Pitroda gave us and the question that was originally asked.

quanto

Keywords: Quanto, compact sports utility vehicle, Mahindra, Xylo, exports, M&M, Verito sedan, diesel price hike, Rexton sports utility vehicle

NEW DELHI, SEP 21:

Mahindra & Mahindra on Friday said it is expecting to produce 2,500 units of its latest compact sports utility vehicle Quanto in October.

“For October, our production plan is 2,500 units of Quanto. After selling these vehicles, we hope to get more demand for the vehicle,” Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) Chief Executive (Automotive Division) Pravin Shah told reporters here.

The company has a combined production capacity of 7,000 units per month for its multi utility vehicle Xylo and Quanto, which was launched yesterday in Mumbai. It will be produced at its Nashik facility.

“Currently, we are producing around 2,500 units of Xylo. Rest we can use for Quanto... We will not have much problem in ramping up the capacity of Quanto as many of the parts are common with Xylo,” Shah added.

The company today unveiled the Quanto here. It is priced between Rs 5.99 lakh and Rs 7.57 lakh (ex—showroom, Delhi).

M&M will start exporting the Quanto to neigbhouring countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal and Sri Lanka, besides South Africa to begin with in the next three—four months, which will be followed by Europe and Latin America.

The sub four—metre Quanto is powered by a three—cylinder 1.5 litre diesel engine. The company has invested Rs 100 crore in developing the five—seater Quanto.

A sub four—metre Verito sedan will hit the roads by the end of this financial year, Shah said.

“We do not forsee any impact despite the diesel price hike as the interest rate is easing. So the impact will get mitigated,” M&M GM marketing R K Mitra said in Kolkata on the sidelines of launch of Quanto.

M&M also plans to launch Rexton sports utility vehicle from its South Korean subsidiary SsangYong Motor’s stable and Mahindra Reva NXR electric car ahead of the Diwali.

Mamata Banerjee vs Government: Compromise evasive, no talk of rollback

New Delhi/ Kolkata: The UPA government is in a minority after its biggest ally, Mamata Banerjee, dropped out last night on account of bold economic measures introduced by the PM last week.
Here are the top 10 developments in this story:

Sources in the Petroleum Ministry say that so far, the government has not agreed to a partial rollback of diesel prices, or an increase in the amount of subsidised cooking gas for households. These concessions could have helped propitiate Ms Banerjee, who announced her exit from the UPA last night over the PM's decisions to reduce fuel subsidies and open the retail sector to foreign companies.

However, Congress-ruled states will give three extra subsidised cooking gas cylinders, the party announced today. Spokesperson Janardhan Dwivedi said that party president Sonia Gandhi has instructed state governments on this issue. This announcement puts the party at odds with the government's reforms agenda, that is being led from the front by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Tuesday permitted city police to allow vehicular parking at Shivaji Park in central Mumbai for three days during the ensuing Ganesh Chaturthi festival.

A division bench of Justices D Y Chandrachud and Amjad Sayyed was hearing an application filed by the city police seeking permission to allow vehicles to park at Shivaji Park.

The application seeking permission was filed as another bench of the high court had declared Shivaji Park as silence zone and directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to not grant permission to any festival celebrations in the area.

The area was declared as silence zone during hearing of a public interest litigation filed by an NGO 'Wecom Trust'.

MIAMI -- The Florida Marlins topped two million in season attendance on Monday for only the third time in franchise history.

But the Marlins didn't celebrate the milestone with a victory.

And the final figure for the first year in their new ballpark will fall short of expectations. Internally, team officials were projecting close to 2.7 million fans, or about 500,000 more than what the end tally is expected to show.

Instead, the rebranded Miami Marlins will settle for the largest season total since 1997 when they logged attendance of 2.3 million.

Losing contributed to the turnouts, and the last-place Marlins provided more evidence of that on Monday when they dropped a 7-5 decision to Atlanta.

Former Marlin Dan Uggla, who was benched for underperformance just over a week ago before working his way back into the lineup, belted a three-run home run off Wade LeBlanc in the Braves' four-run first inning.

"That was just a mistake," LeBlanc said. "Tried to go away, left it middle, and to a hitter like that, you can't afford to do that. Other than Uggla, it was just one of those nights."

Said Marlins manager Ozzie Guillen: "He made one bad pitch, and he paid for it."

Atlanta went ahead 6-0 in the fourth.

But the Marlins rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning against Tim Hudson, who has long given them trouble.

The Marlins used the ballpark's spacious dimensions to their favor, with Bryan Petersen and Gorkys Hernandez driving in three of the four runs with back-to-back triples.

Hernandez, who was once regarded as a top prospect in the Braves' farm system before winding up with the Pirates and traded to the Marlins, brought a .157 average into the series opener. But he raised it with a single in his first at-bat, a double in his second and a triple in his third.

That put him in position to attempt a rare "natural" cycle in which the batter singles, doubles, triples and homers " in that order. It has been accomplished just 14 times in major-league history, making it rarer than a perfect game.

But Hernandez, who had hit only two homers in 102 career major-league at-bats entering Monday, struck out in his fourth trip to the plate. No Marlin has ever hit for a cycle of any kind.

"Very nice surprise," manager Ozzie Guillen said of Hernandez.

The Marlins still came up with a run in the seventh, however, to trim Atlanta's lead to 6-5. After Hernandez struck out, Jose Reyes doubled into the right-field corner and Carlos Lee followed with an RBI single. Lee began the night with a .347 average with runners in scoring position since joining the Marlins in July.

"We made it interesting," Guillen said. "We battled, and we made the game pretty fun."

The Braves added an insurance run in the eighth on Martin Prado's RBI single off Ryan Webb to make it 7-5. Prado had four singles in his four at-bats, and he also drove in a pair of runs.

The Marlins tallied 14 hits, and five players had at least two hits each.

Today was supposed to be the release date for Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, a remake of the popular Dungeons and Dragons PC RPG. However, Overhaul Games has decided to delay the game.

"After recently reviewing the game and then consulting with our partners, we've decided to ensure that Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition is the best possible product on launch," said Overhaul president Trent Oster on theofficial forums. "Thus, we have pushed back the release date of the game. Our plan is to release in November, 2012."

Oster adds that they're working on "something a little extra" for everyone who has pre-ordered. Additional details will be released at a later date.

Baldur's Gate, BioWare's first RPG, was released back in 1998. The main character was an orphan being hunted by a mysterious knight. This orphan, along with a party of companions, gradually unearths a massive conspiracy that threatens all of the Sword Coast. The game was notable for its epic storyline and strategic real-time combat.

The Enhanced Edition makes a number of improvements to the original, such as revamping the interface and improved multiplayer matchmaking. The remake also adds three new NPC companions for players to recruit. A new adventure set in the Black Pits is said to provide 6 hours of additional gameplay.

The new November launch window still means that this remake will have to compete with high-profile fall releases. It's a shame that Overhaul couldn't finish it by this summer, before the holiday rush began. They might've been able to attract more attention from people previously uninitiated with the series. Plus, it would've been a fun game to play on the beach.

is world going to end in 2012

2012: Beginning of the End or Why the World Won't End?
12.22.11
Scenes from the motion picture "2012." Courtesy Columbia Pictures.Remember the Y2K scare? It came and went without much of a whimper because of adequate planning and analysis of the situation. Impressive movie special effects aside, Dec. 21, 2012, won't be the end of the world as we know. It will, however, be another winter solstice.

Much like Y2K, 2012 has been analyzed and the science of the end of the Earth thoroughly studied. Contrary to some of the common beliefs out there, the science behind the end of the world quickly unravels when pinned down to the 2012 timeline. Below, NASA Scientists answer several questions that we're frequently asked regarding 2012.

Question (Q): Are there any threats to the Earth in 2012? Many Internet websites say the world will end in December 2012.
Answer (A): Nothing bad will happen to the Earth in 2012. Our planet has been getting along just fine for more than 4 billion years, and credible scientists worldwide know of no threat associated with 2012.

Q: What is the origin of the prediction that the world will end in 2012?
A: The story started with claims that Nibiru, a supposed planet discovered by the Sumerians, is headed toward Earth. This catastrophe was initially predicted for May 2003, but when nothing happened the doomsday date was moved forward to December 2012. Then these two fables were linked to the end of one of the cycles in the ancient Mayan calendar at the winter solstice in 2012 -- hence the predicted doomsday date of December 21, 2012.

Q: Does the Mayan calendar end in December 2012?
A: Just as the calendar you have on your kitchen wall does not cease to exist after December 31, the Mayan calendar does not cease to exist on December 21, 2012. This date is the end of the Mayan long-count period but then -- just as your calendar begins again on January 1 -- another long-count period begins for the Mayan calendar.

Q: Could phenomena occur where planets align in a way that impacts Earth?
A: There are no planetary alignments in the next few decades, Earth will not cross the galactic plane in 2012, and even if these alignments were to occur, their effects on the Earth would be negligible. Each December the Earth and sun align with the approximate center of the Milky Way Galaxy but that is an annual event of no consequence.

"There apparently is a great deal of interest in celestial bodies, and their locations and trajectories at the end of the calendar year 2012. Now, I for one love a good book or movie as much as the next guy. But the stuff flying around through cyberspace, TV and the movies is not based on science. There is even a fake NASA news release out there..."
- Don Yeomans, NASA senior research scientistQ: Is there a planet or brown dwarf called Nibiru or Planet X or Eris that is approaching the Earth and threatening our planet with widespread destruction?
A: Nibiru and other stories about wayward planets are an Internet hoax. There is no factual basis for these claims. If Nibiru or Planet X were real and headed for an encounter with the Earth in 2012, astronomers would have been tracking it for at least the past decade, and it would be visible by now to the naked eye. Obviously, it does not exist. Eris is real, but it is a dwarf planet similar to Pluto that will remain in the outer solar system; the closest it can come to Earth is about 4 billion miles.

Q: What is the polar shift theory? Is it true that the earth’s crust does a 180-degree rotation around the core in a matter of days if not hours?
A: A reversal in the rotation of Earth is impossible. There are slow movements of the continents (for example Antarctica was near the equator hundreds of millions of years ago), but that is irrelevant to claims of reversal of the rotational poles. However, many of the disaster websites pull a bait-and-switch to fool people. They claim a relationship between the rotation and the magnetic polarity of Earth, which does change irregularly, with a magnetic reversal taking place every 400,000 years on average. As far as we know, such a magnetic reversal doesn’t cause any harm to life on Earth. A magnetic reversal is very unlikely to happen in the next few millennia, anyway.

Earth, as seen in the Blue Marble: Next Generation collection of images, showing the color of the planet's surface in high resolution. This image shows South America from September 2004.Q: Is the Earth in danger of being hit by a meteor in 2012?
A: The Earth has always been subject to impacts by comets and asteroids, although big hits are very rare. The last big impact was 65 million years ago, and that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs. Today NASA astronomers are carrying out a survey called the Spaceguard Survey to find any large near-Earth asteroids long before they hit. We have already determined that there are no threatening asteroids as large as the one that killed the dinosaurs. All this work is done openly with the discoveries posted every day on the NASA NEO Program Office website, so you can see for yourself that nothing is predicted to hit in 2012.

Q: How do NASA scientists feel about claims of pending doomsday?
A: For any claims of disaster or dramatic changes in 2012, where is the science? Where is the evidence? There is none, and for all the fictional assertions, whether they are made in books, movies, documentaries or over the Internet, we cannot change that simple fact. There is no credible evidence for any of the assertions made in support of unusual events taking place in December 2012.
› Why you need not fear a supernova
› About super volcanoes

Q: Is there a danger from giant solar storms predicted for 2012?
A: Solar activity has a regular cycle, with peaks approximately every 11 years. Near these activity peaks, solar flares can cause some interruption of satellite communications, although engineers are learning how to build electronics that are protected against most solar storms. But there is no special risk associated with 2012. The next solar maximum will occur in the 2012-2014 time frame and is predicted to be an average solar cycle, no different than previous cycles throughout history.

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 17:

With a total of 34 advertisers, including the likes of Reliance and Hero MotoCorp on board, ESPN Star today said the upcoming T20 cricket World Cup will be its best ever in terms of advertising revenue, which according to industry estimates is nearly Rs 250 crore.

“We have completely sold out our ad inventory. A total of 34 advertisers are on board with us for the upcoming T20 World Cup,” ESPN Software India Pvt Ltd Executive Vice-President Sanjay Kailash told PTI.

The broadcaster has roped in Hero MotoCorp, Reliance Communications and Havells India as the joint presenting sponsors.

It has also signed up Hyundai Motor India, Tata Motors, PepsiCo, Pernod Ricard, Nokia, Tata Teleservices and Union Bank of India as associate sponsors.

When asked about revenues from advertisement, Kailash declined to share the details but said: “This is the fourth T20 World Cup that we are broadcasting and this is our best ever in terms of ads”.

Industry sources, however, said ESPN Star will be earning close to about Rs 250 crore from advertisements during the tournament, which will be played from September 18 to October 7 in Sri Lanka.

“The ad rates are upwards of Rs 3.5 lakh per 10-second spot,” a source said.

Media planners feel the timing of the tournament has made it perfect for advertisers to reach out to customers, specially in India.

“This T20 World Cup is timed very well as this is the onset of the festive season in India. With all the big teams playing, it is not surprising that the ad spots are sold out,” ZenithOptimedia Managing Partner, Navin Khemka said.

In India, the broadcaster will telecast live all the 27 matches on its Star Cricket and Star Cricket HD channels. ESPN Star has also planned a simulcast of all India matches, semi-finals and the final with Hindi commentary on its ESPN channel.

The company’s presentation team includes ex-cricket stars Sourav Ganguly, Sanjay Manjrekar, Nasser Hussain, Wasim Akram, Ramiz Raja, Tony Greig, Ian Chappell, Mark Waugh, along with other known faces such as Harsha Bhogle and Alan Wilkins.

ESPN Star had also sold the syndication rights of the tournament to 218 territories across the world.

There is a lot of discussion happening on development of research methodology exclusively for the study of dance forms like Kuchipudi, he said at a seminar-cum-workshop organised at the Department of Dance of the Andhra University by Nataraj Music and Dance Academy in collaboration with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations. He offered to conduct a three-day seminar on Yakshagana and the Andhra University was ready to host it.

BARFI gets very good amount of shows at multiplexes and the - NG

Mumbai, Sept. 13 -- When Ranbir Kapoor, Ileana D'Cruz and Anurag Basu visited the Hindustan Times office last Friday, they were nearly two-and-a-half hours late. But the crowd that had gathered to chat with them at 4.30 pm had not dispersed. They were keen enough to meet the Barfi! team to even delay their Friday evening plans.

And when they finally arrived, Ranbir, Ileana and Anurag more than made up for their unpunctuality. Starving after a day filled with promotions, they asked for and got pizzas and soft drinks, and cheerfully sat through an hour-long interactive session with the crowd, answering questions, posing for pictures and signing autographs.

Most of the questions, of course, were directed at Ranbir, whose films in the past have made him quite a hero. But the actor did all he could to share the limelight with his co-star Ileana, and director Anurag dada (as Basu is fondly referred to).

So what did the three of them talk about?

Lots of things; from Barfi! (of course) to Dabangg (2010); competition and rivalry within the film industry; Ileana's surprise role in the film; and Anurag's bond with the "fine-bred" star kid, Ranbir. Ranbir also surprised the room with his candid responses to questions regarding rivals of the same age, the people he draws inspiration from (Charlie Chaplin and Mr Bean!), and how he selects his films.

'Actors take too much credit'

Ranbir, Ileana and Anurag talk about films, inspirations and a famous grandfather

Apple’s new iPhone: live event

India May Have to Wait for iPhone 5

The moment Apple’s head of marketing Phil Schiller announced the new iPhone 5, the technology world truly parked itself divided into 2 camps -- Apple fans on one side and the rest on other, who cannot stand the former.

Heated discussions among technology reviewers and digital enthusiasts on social networking site Twitter followed. Vishal Gondal of Indiagames tweeted, “iPhone users upgrade to iPhone 5, Android users sulk as nothing new to copy, rest move to Nokia Lumia WP8, Think Different!”

Clearly a non-Apple fan, Gaurav Hasabnis, Editor of FoneArena, wondered, “Can I just drag & drop content in my new revolutionary iPhone 5 without iTunes? But it still has 5x better experience! ROFL.” Mahesh Murthy, who runs digital media agency, Pinstorm critiqued the iPhone 5 features when he tweeted, “My year-old Galaxy Note has a 97% bigger screen & 41% more pixels than yesterday's #iPhone5. Long way to catch up, Apple!”

Female condom suffers rejection

Female condom yet to gain acceptability

The use of female condoms as a preventive measure in the battle against HIV and Aids remains a far away cry with many people in the country rejecting it, National Aids Commission (Nac) has admitted.

Invented in the 1980s by a Danish physician Dr Lasse Hessel, the female condom is a safe device that is used during sexual intercourse as a barrier contraceptive and enables women to reduce their risk of sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, syphilis, and HIV and Aids.

The safe sex tool, however, continues to suffer underutilisation across the globe and Malawi has not been spared.

Speaking when she toured several establishments in Chikwawa, Nac Board Chair Mara Kumbweza-Banda said it was clear the female latex continued to be snubbed, saying it defeats the idea behind its introduction.

Her observations coincided with the observation of the first ever Global Female Condom Day yesterday aimed at calling for greater access to, and increased education on the importance of female condoms.

"It is clear that due to our culture and the nature of the condom, the information coming out there indicates there is little use of the condom and the duty is on us all to promote its use," she said.

Kumbweza-Banda said culturally sex in Malawi is initiated by men and this gives them more power to negotiate the kind of sex they want and, often, they are discouraged by women who propose they use a condom.

Confusing ITAR Compliance at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

Confusing ITAR Compliance at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

On 28-29 August 2012, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) held a Systems Engineering Review for a potential geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) servicing mission. Despite stating that "Interested parties must register in order to attend"a number of participants have told me that they did not register in advance and just showed up. According to attendees, during the meeting, participants were openly encouraged to use their cellphones to take pictures of the materials shown on the screen - some (but not all) of which were labeled "predecisional". None of the charts shown had any marking denoting that they were ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) sensitive in nature.

On 30 August 2012 I made a request to NASA GSFC PAO for a copy of a presentation titled"Systems Engineering Review of the RESTORE mission." that had been presented on 28 August. On 6 September 2012 I got the following response back from GSFC PAO with regard to my request:

"The Satellite Servicing Capabilities Office (SSCO) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center has received your request to provide a copy of the presentation package given on August 28-29, 2012 at the Systems Engineering Review (https://www.fbo.gov/?s=opportunity&mode=form&tab=core&id=6fd53a246b22fd1777c01bd51cfd0901&_cview=0) for a potential geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) servicing mission.

The package was not handed to the participants at the review because it contains ITAR-restricted data and material relevant to a potential competitive solicitation. We are in the process of preparing the package for distribution. Attendees whose citizenship was previously confirmed will be sent the version of the package with all ITAR data clearly labeled as such. A non-ITAR package will be posted on our public website.

We welcome your interest in this Review and SSCO's activities to advance robotic satellite-servicing technologies. Our team encourages you to visit our website (http://ssco.gsfc.nasa.gov/) for information about SSCO's technology development campaign. We'd be happy to give you a tour of the Satellite Servicing Center located at Goddard Space Flight Center at your convenience."

This is a little odd. Aren't things with ITAR sensitivity supposed to marked that way to begin with - certainly before they are discussed or referenced in a public forum? If I read this right, ITAR labeling is only being applied to materials - after the fact - materials that were already discussed at this meeting. The original meeting notice says "Due to the content of the presentations and facility security requirements, only U.S. citizens may attend. All attendees will be required to present government issued photo identification upon entry to the event".

If only American citizens were allowed in this meeting, then they would all have shown proof of their citizenship, right? Or were some attendees not American citizens? If the material had been labeled in advance as being ITAR sensitive - and everyone in attendance was a U.S. citizen - then couldn't copies have been given to all attendees at the meeting? And if this material is also competition sensitive (in addition to ITAR sensitive), why were all attendees openly encouraged to use their cellphones to record copies of these materials? This meeting was held in a large auditorium and no one was checking to see who walked in.

Update: NASA GSFC PAO provided this response on 7 September 2012:

"In response to your query, the citizenship of all of the participants at the Review was verified prior to their admittance into the event. Each slide was clearly labeled at the bottom that "Use or disclosure of this data is subject to the restriction on the title page of this document." The title page had the detailed ITAR language. Further, periodically throughout the two-day event, ITAR reminders were given verbally to the participants. Ultimately it is the legal responsibility of each U.S. person that attended the Review to not further distribute ITAR-controlled material to non-U.S. persons."

This begs the question: Why were attendees openly encouraged to take pictures of these slides with their cellphones? Witnesses tell me that this was done. That sounds contrary to the notion that this information is not to be shared. Was every page of the ITAR-sensitive documents tagged with an ITAR notice? Documents get distributed in pieces all the time. My understanding is that every page needs an ITAR warning. Is that what NASA is adding to these documents now? Also, why was the word "predecisional" used when refering to ITAR-sensitive information?

According to participants, the event was held in a large auditorium. The lights were partially dimmed. No one was present to look at badges for people entering the room once the meeting was under way.

COAL scam

I-T, ED on trail in coal allocations scam

In more trouble for allotees of coal blocks, the Income Tax department and Enforcement Directorate are scanning investments and finances of the firms that are alleged to have illegally benefited in the scam.

Both the agencies under the Finance Ministry have begun a discreet inquiry into the firms, especially those who have been recently booked by the CBI in its latest FIR.

Sources monitoring the probes said that while the agencies are yet to be officially handed over the CBI complaint, they have begun a preliminary exercise to obtain data about the "financial activities" of these firms.

ganesh chaturthi : mandals get finshing touches

MUMBAI: Heavy rains have put a spanner in the works of Ganpati mandals, who are approaching the BMC, MMRDA and MbPT(Mumbai Port Trust) to address their grievances at the eleventh hour. With just a week to go before Ganeshotsav, few are hopeful the situation will improve.

Mandals complain that neither MMRDA, MbPT nor PWD is paying heed. "The BMC has at least responded to our complaints, but the other agencies have not even called a meeting yet," said Naresh Dahibhavkar, president, Brihanmumbai Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Samanvay Samiti. Work has not been initiated in areas like Sewri, not to mention monorail and metro sites that fall under the MMRDA's jurisdiction. As per BMC data, 759 of 21,000 potholes have been identified on roads that belong to the MMRDA or the PWD, where work is yet to start.

At Kastur Park in Borivli, devotees are agonizing over the crater-ridden Western Express Highway. "We are planning to meet officials on Tuesday. We bring our 8-ft tall Ganpati idol in a truck from Jogeshwari, and let alone the inner roads, the condition of the highway gives cause for concern," said spokesperson Sanyog Raje.

To the mandals' disadvantage, the initial dry spell wrought a sense of complacency within the civic body until the rains arrived with force 15 days ago. "There was little awareness since the media also did not take up the issue aggressively. Now, with barely a week to go before the festival, there is little hope," said Raje.

NBC News Skips 9/11 Moment Of Silence On 'Today'

NBC News is drawing fire after it chose to air an interview with "Keeping Up With the Kardashians" star Kris Jenner on Tuesday morning, instead of the moment of silence remembering when the first plane hit the World Trade Center.
Victims' families, the NYPD, FDNY and Port Authority Police observed the moment at 8:46 a.m. at Ground Zero in New York, while President Obama and the First Lady led it at the White House.
TV Newser reports that ABC's "Good Morning America," "CBS This Morning" and the cable news networks carried the moment. NBC News and "Today," however, skipped it in favor of Jenner discussing the upcoming season of her show and her breast implants.
Viewers sounded off on on Twitter, calling the network's decision a "major fail" and a "new all time low." "Shame on them," one person wrote, while another responded, "stay classy."
TV Newser notes that NBC News' broadcast in New York City did air the moment of silence. WNBC broke into the show with local coverage.

Nation remembers 9/11 attacks

NEW YORK -- Victims' families and others gathered Tuesday at Ground Zero, the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pa., to remember the terrorist attacks that devastated the nation 11 years ago.
In New York City, remembrances marked one of the city's most tragic days.
"It is extremely important that people never forget what happened on Sept. 11," said New York City Fire Commissioner Salvatore Cassano, who is attending many events to commemorate those who lost their lives that day.
Security was tight as police officers in crisp, blue uniforms stood among men in suits with badges attached to their belt buckles. Police cars with flashing lights parked just off the West Side Highway near the World Trade Center site. A giant flag on the Freedom Tower unfurled early as cops stood nearby watching.

Official data has revealed that the amount of food grains wasted in Food Corporation of India (FCI) godowns in the state has increased by an astonishing 10 times over the last two years.
The alarming state was revealed in the Lok Sabha recently after Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, K V Thomas tabled a statement in reply to a query by Chalakkudy M P K P Dhanapalan. Dhanapalan had asked about the amount of damaged food grains in various godowns in the country and the minister’s reply revealed that the stock accrued as damaged or nonissuable in FCI godowns in the state had grown from 19 tons in 2009-10 to 99 tons in 2010-11 to 200 tons in 2011-12.
The data shows that the amount wasted by the state went from being 0.28 per cent of the national total in 2009-10 to nearly 6 per cent two years later.
Officials within the state wing of the FCI, however, sought to downplay the statement saying that the bulk of damage was being done before they even receive the grains.
“The amount of grains damaged while being stored in our facilities is not this high. Most of the grains are damaged when the states from which they are being procured undergoes significant climatic changes such as a flood or a drought. A significant percentage is also caused by transit damage due to leaky compartments in the trains they are being transported in. And whatever small damage happens here is due to a lack of space in our storage facilities,” said an FCI official on condition of anonymity.
Food Affairs Minister Anoop Jacob too admitted that there was a shortage of storage space in FCI godowns in the state and said that his dept would take steps to rectify this.  “The problem is that while the central govt has no problem allotting the funds to built additional storage space, we cannot find the space to build these facilities on. I have asked officials to identify space to construct more storage facilities immediately,” he said.

In many countries, Teachers' Days are intended to be special days for the appreciation of teachersWorld Teachers' Day is celebrated across the world on September 7. [edit]History

The idea of celebrating Teachers' Day took ground independently in many countries during the 20th century; in most cases, they celebrate a local educator or an important milestone in education (for example, Argentina commemorates Domingo Faustino Sarmiento's death on September 11 since 1915,Dr.Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan's birthday on September 5 since 1962 Teachers Day in India - Presidents abdul speech . These two factors explain why almost all countries celebrate this day on different dates, unlike many other International Days. 45SQEWWE

These activities are planned by senior students in the Student Council who coordinate the activities well in advance.

South KoreaMay 15 since 1963 in Seoul and 1964 in Chunju CityOriginally it was started by a group of Red Cross youth team members who visited their sick ex-teachers in hospitals. The national celebration ceremony was stopped between 1973 and 1982 but it resumed after that. On the day, teachers are usually presented with carnations by their students, and both enjoy a shorter school day. Ex-students pay their respects to their former teachers by visiting them and giving them a carnation. Many schools now close on Teachers' Day because of the rampant bribery implicit in the expensive gifts often given to teachers. Schools can use the day to have an outing for the teachers.

TaiwanSeptember 28Taiwan uses this day to honor teachers' virtues, struggles, and contributions not only to their own students but also to society in general. People often make use of the day to express their gratitude to their teachers, such as paying them a visit or sending them a card. This date was chosen to commemorate the birth of Confucius, believed to be the model master educator in ancient China. In 1939, the Ministry of Education established the national holiday as August 27, the attributed birthday of Confucius.
In 1952, the Executive Yuan changed it to September, stating that it was calculated to be the precise date in the Gregorian calendar. The festival celebration occurs in the temples of Confucius around the island, known as the "Grand Ceremony Dedicated to Confucius" (祭孔大典). The ceremony begins at 6am with drum beats. 54 musicians are dressed in robes with blue belts, and 36 (or 64) dancers dressed in yellow with green belts. They are led by Confucius's chief descendant (currently Kung Tsui-chang) and followed by ceremonial officers. Three animals—the cow, the goat, and the pig—are sacrificed. The hairs plucked from these sacrificed animals are called the Hairs of Wisdom. In addition, local education institutes and civil offices award certain teachers for their excellence and positive influence.

United StatesNational Teacher Day is on Tuesday during Teacher Appreciation Week, which takes place in the first full week of May (May 8, 2012)Students often show appreciation for their teachers with token gifts (giving teachers presents etc.). The National Education Association describes National Teacher Day as "a day for honoring teachers and recognizing the lasting contributions they make to our lives".[14]
The NEA gives a history of National Teacher Day:[14] The origins of Teacher Day are murky. Around 1944 Wisconsin teacher Ryan Krug began corresponding with political and education leaders about the need for a national day to honor teachers. Woodbridge wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt who in 1953 persuaded the 81st Congress to proclaim a National Teacher Day. NEA along with its Kansas and Indiana state affiliates and the Dodge City (Kan. ) local lobbied Congress to create a national day celebrating teachers. Congress declared March 7, 1980, as National Teacher Day for that year only. NEA and its affiliates continued to observe Teacher Day on the first Tuesday in March until 1985, when the National PTA established Teacher Appreciation Week as the first full week of May. The NEA Representative Assembly then voted to make the Tuesday of that week National Teacher Day.
As of September 7, 1976, September 11 was also adopted as Teachers' Day in the U.S. state ofMassachusetts. Currently, Massachusetts sets the first Sunday of June as its own Teachers' Day, annually.

Former students also pay respect to their former teachers on this day. The holiday has its origins in a meeting between educators in communist bloc nations in Warsaw in 1957.
