“Barfi!”, the heart-rending tale of a deaf and mute boy falling in love with an autistic girl has won hearts worldwide and collected Rs 34.6 crore in its opening weekend, reports NDTV on Monday, September 17, 2012.

Directed by Anurag Basu, “Barfi!” features Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Illeana D’Cruz, Saurabh Shukla, Roopa Ganguly and Jishu Sengupta.

“The film, made at a budget of Rs 30 crore, talks about love beyond language and disability. With this theme, it managed to mint Rs 9.20 crore on its opening day, Rs 11.50 crore on the second day and Rs 13.5 crore on Sunday.”

In fact, “Barfi!” is Priyanka’s second biggest opener in 2012 after “Agneepath.”

Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted that although "Barfi!” was a limited-release, the “occupancy at multiplexes was fantastic.”



Discussing Monday trends, he quipped that the attendance was at par with Sunday morning shows at urban centers.

Internationally, the film did equally good business and raked in good profits in New Zealand, Australia, U.K. and in the U.S.A. In the Gulf, it was Ranbir Kapoor's biggest opener.

Gaurav Verma, director, India theatrical distribution, Studios, Disney UTV, said, "We had the right strategy and identified the right cinemas for a content as unique as Barfi! and simultaneously ensured that it's available to all. The result is there for all to see from the overwhelming and unprecedented response that we have received from across the country."
