BROOKSVILLE, Fla. -- School children have been put on notice.

Starting Oct. 1, they can't use the back gate at Brookridge mobile home park in Brooksville.

Every day, about 50 children use a path through the gate, which the Tampa Bay Times ( http://bit.ly/QgWXQp) calls the shortest and safest route to nearby schools.

The decision has infuriated parents, who say children will have to take much longer routes to school.

And some residents of the community of 2,500 double-wide mobile homes aren't happy the Brookridge board made the decision during a closed meeting.

Board members say they're concerned about security and don't have the money to put a guard at the gate.

But some residents told the Times they believe their objective is to make Brookridge a 55-and-older community.
